Various RootsWeb entries give his birth date as 1718, 1724, 1732, 1735, and 1740.

One RootsWeb entry gives him a middle name of Edwin.

A lot of RootsWeb entries show that he had a daughter Mary Gardner Tompkins, but I'm not sure that is correct. Mary's birth date is given as 1744, 1755, and 1764, and she is shown born in Morristown NJ. The first two of those dates were before James was married. It looks like James was having children in NC in the 1760s, so it looks like Mary does not belong with this family.
Possibly James had a first wife who was the mother of Mary.
