Born: 1843-12-27 Grifte, Germany
Died: (unknown) Chicago, Cook Co, Illinois USA
Marriages:
1. 1875-10-14 Malinda Grunstad

Children of Conrad Sinning and Malinda Grunstad:
Conrad William II Sinning b. 1880-02-09
*Gustav William Sinning b. 1883-03-01
Lewis Johan Sinning b. 1884-07-12

Notes:

Our family history says that he immigrated with a wife Ingabar, who died soon after they arrived, and that
Conrad then abandoned their three children. Other branches of his descendants have similar stories.
This turns out to be partly correct. He clearly married Malinda and had the three children after he
immigrated. He did abandon the children, but it was in 1887, before Malinda died.

There was a "Conr" Sinning age 24-ish who arrived in NY 1864-07-18 from Altenbruslar on ship America,
departed Bremen. No wife is shown, though. That's not my Conrad, though.

This page used to have a vast amount of information on the Sinning family in Germany, but seems to now
have it all password-protected. It didn't mention Conrad at the time it was open.
The page is for the Sinning Family Association in Germany. They have published three very large books
(in German) with their information.
Another US Sinning researcher (not from my Conrad) has a copy of the books and kindly looked up my
Conrad for me. It gives his birthdate and says he emigrated to Chicago. The information I have on his
ancestors is from there.

Cook Co IL marriage license 23242, dated 1875-09-28
His age is given as 26, and hers as 21.

--
History of Wright Co MO:
"Conrad sold brooms and worked as a bookkeeper in a poultry house. He owned property inside the
Loop in Chicago."

Note: that may or may not be correct. The article on Conrad is credited to Karen Murr, but she says
she did not write it.

--
It appears they had another son Carl 1890 who died at age 1 in Chicago. There may have been another Sinning family in Chicago, though.

The Chicago Voter Registration rolls for 1892 show
529 Rebey St: Conrad Sinnen of Germany; lived in state 31 years; naturalized citizen; papers dated 1867

That must be my Conrad.

1900 census Cook Co IL p 20b (boarding house in Chicago ward 18, W Randolph Street)
boarder Conrad Sinning 56 1843-12 GER/GER/GER

He is a chemist. He can read, write, and speak English. He immigrated in 1867, and has been in the US 33 years. He is naturalized.

I cannot find him on earlier censuses. I think he probably didn't trust the government, and either hid from
the census takers or refused to answer their questions. I think the only reason he is listed above is that
the information came from the manager of the boarding house.
